When someone in Dar es Salaam searches "printing services near me" or "accountant in Arusha", the businesses that appear first get most of the calls. Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the work of helping your website appear in those results. It can get very technical, but most small businesses can make big progress with the basics.
1. Make sure Google can read your website
This sounds obvious, but it is a common problem. If your website is blocked by a security setting, hidden behind a login, or very slow, Google cannot read it properly. Set up Google Search Console (it is free), verify your website and use the URL inspection tool to check that Google sees your real pages. Submit your sitemap so Google can find all of them.
2. Use the words your customers use
Think about what customers actually type into Google. A customer might search "school uniforms Mwanza" rather than "educational apparel solutions". Use these natural phrases in:
- your page titles;
- the main heading on each page;
- the first paragraph of your text;
- image descriptions (alt text).
Do not stuff keywords unnaturally – write for people first.
3. Give every page a clear title and description
The page title is the blue link people see in Google. A good title says what the page is about and where you operate, for example "Office Furniture in Dar es Salaam | Your Business Name". The meta description is the short summary under it; write one or two sentences that make people want to click.
4. Create useful content
Google rewards pages that answer real questions. A short page that only says "We provide quality services" gives Google little to work with. Instead:
- write a separate page for each main service;
- explain what you offer, who it is for, how it works and what it costs (or what affects the price);
- add a frequently asked questions section;
- publish helpful articles that answer common customer questions.
5. Set up your Google Business Profile
For local businesses, your free Google Business Profile is often more important than your website. Complete every section, add real photos, keep your hours accurate and ask happy customers for reviews. Make sure your business name, address and phone number match exactly on your website and profile.
6. Make your site fast and mobile friendly
Most Tanzanian visitors use phones on mobile data. Compress images, remove unnecessary scripts and make buttons easy to tap. Google's PageSpeed Insights tool shows what to improve.
7. Earn links and mentions
When other trusted websites link to yours – industry associations, local directories, partners, news sites – Google sees your business as more credible. Get listed in reputable directories, ask partners to link to you and share useful content that others want to reference. Avoid buying links; it can get your site penalised.
8. Be patient and measure
SEO is not instant. New pages can take days or weeks to appear, and rankings improve gradually. In Search Console, watch:
- how many of your pages are indexed;
- which searches show your site;
- how many people click through.
Use what you learn to improve pages and write new content around the searches that matter.
